Best Christmas Gift 2008
I was thinking that one of the best Christmas gifts for 2008 would be a silver coin from 2001 found at Ground Zero in New York. The Silver Eagle dug from the debris of the World Trade Center and found in a vault under ground. This coin has with stood the destruction of the towers coming down and the extreme heat of the fires that raged for days after 9-11. This coin is a symble of America on how it gets itself up after it has been torn down and still looks as beautifull as ever. To give that gift to the guy or girl that has everything else, this would be the most treasured gift of all. The coins where found in both Silver, Gold and Platinum and was certified by PCGS as Ground Zero Recovery Coins.

So new information comes to me every day now and here is something that I did not know. The 190 series is a 6 coin set, total coins in the set is not 190 coins but 1,140 coins.
The 6 coins in this set are the 2001 $1 silver,$5,$10,$25,$50 gold, $100 Platinum. Most sets have been split up but the original set that came out from the world trade center was these 6 coins in 1 of 190
I will correct the information other place in this website to make the corrections.

PCGS WTC Coins Time Line
- 11 September 2001, one of the worst days in American history next to the attack of Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941.
- 11 September 2001, the New York State Quarter 9-11 Firefighters coins are made with the special flag inserts. The New York State Quarter 9-11 Firefighters coin project was started at the PCGS Collectors Universe Forum by PCGS authorized dealer Mitchell Spivac and members of the Collectors Universe Forum forum. 100 numbered coins were finally completed with the help of PCGS. The US Flag insert used with the coin was designed by Senior Vice President of PCGS Miles Standish. 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) Widows and Children’s Fund. The auction of the 100 coins (numbered 1 thought 100) raised well over $42,000 thousand dollars. 9-11 quarter full story
- 1 November 2001 the workers at Ground Zero in New York reach the Iron Mountain Vault.
- 1 November - 1 December 2001 Coins are sent to Collectors Universe for certification. Collectors Universe does not grade coins so the coins are only certified and sonically sealed as "Gem Uncirculated" The initial sale of these coins is advertised by only a few authorized dealers which state that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these coins would be donated to the relief fund set up for the victims of September 11, 2001.
- 1 December 2001, PCGS gets into the picture and starts grading coins from ground zero. The coins being holdered by PCGS receive the respective grade and then are sonically sealed with a bar coded certification number. On some of the coins, the bar code is hidden behind the PCGS hologram.
- January 2002-June 2002, PCGS continues grading the different coin recovered as ordered by the “Originators” Coins encapsulated were gold, platinum, silver, copper etc. etc. Some coins were paired up in special sets with limited edition markings such as the 1 of 1000, 1 of 1140 etc. etc. Coins from approximately 10 different countries were recovered and authenticated, some with very low populations as stated on the certified holder.
- January 2001- 2004, collectors start to include World Trade Center Recovered coin into their registry sets although they are not recognized as WTC pieces when the certification number is looked up in the PCGS data base.
- January 2002 – Present, the controversy surrounding the WTC recovered coins has the numismatic community split up. Some collectors love the coins and consider them invaluable pieces of “American history” while others hate them with a passion and refer to them as "death coins". In the meantime, the WTC coins continue to increase in value as other similar non WTC PCGS certified coins of the same year trade for considerable less.
One last we would like to mention is that these coins are not for everyone! We respect everyone else’s opinions, point of views and we hope that you do the same for everyone else too? If you are of the opinion that these coins should not be sold for a profit because of where they came from, that is your opinion and we respect it. However, to us, they are priceless and we will proudly display them for all to see no matter who buys or sells them.

WTC Coins 1 of ????
So this is pretty cool, some of the coins from the WTC Ground Zero vault are numbered like the one in the picture above. This means that they all came from the same lot or same person. So lets say John Smith had 269 coins in the vault and all the coins got to PCGS they would then number his coins 1 of 269. All his coins would be numbered like this so there are no 2 of 269 all are numbered 1 of 269 and they are all grade by PCGS. He could have had many $1 silver eagles and like a series of 1986 gold eagles. Well what happen then was that he would sell off parts of his collection and now these coins are out there. Many people are trying to put together whole gold or platinum collections in numbered coins. So they are trying to put together the coins that where in the vault together and I think that is cool. Most numbered coins is graded as Gem Uncirculated coins witch is at least MS65 but some coins may be even better than that they where just never graded like that the time and extra care and diligence of an actual Numismatic Grade like MS69 was never given to these coins.
So here comes the next question could a coin be send back in to PCGS for a new grading ? Most people I have talked to says don't do it, the very symbol of the coins the American flag in the coin holder will be lost if a coin is re-graded by PCGS.
My personal opinion is that the flag on the coin is very valuable its the original, its the way history has made them. The other thing is at if you know that your coin is a sure MS70 but was graded like a Gem Uncirculated keep your coin and treat it like the MS70 that you think it is but keep the history and the flag on your coin if you want to see the real value in these historic coins this is the way to go.
The numbered coins do not tell us anything about the population of any denomination coin it only tell us that one person had 269 coins and he got them all graded by PCGS. It still really cool to have a Gem Uncirculated coin that is numbered or a set of them with the same number.
The different number coins comes in these numbered series.
1 of 150
1 of 190
1 of 269
1 of 426
1 of 531
1 of 900
1 of 1000
1 of 1100
1 of 1440
With this information we know that at least 6,006 coins in the number series from Ground Zero was recovered. If I am missing any number series please let me know.
