WTC Recovered coins from ground zero at the World Trade Center, September 11, 2001

Attacks Buried Millions Under WTC
"Underneath the crushed concrete and twisted steel girders of the World Trade Center lie about $200 million in gold and silver owned by a Canadian bank.Officials at the Toronto-based Bank of Nova Scotia have no idea when they will be able to recover the gold and silver but aren't worried that someone might try to steal it."All of ground zero is extremely secure,'' said bank spokeswoman Diane Flanagan. The gold and silver was in a vault at 4 World Trade Center, which was reduced to rubble just like the twin towers that collapsed after the Sept. 11 attack. It was not immediately clear in what form the precious metals were in, such as ingots or coins."We have every reason to believe it is safe and intact,'' Flanagan said. "And we have every reason to believe it is fully recoverable.''Besides the legions of police officers who prevent onlookers from approaching the trade center site, the bank has hired its own security contingent to protect the assets.Flanagan wouldn't say how many security officers are on duty at the site for the bank, or what precautions have been put in place. The eight vault employees who kept watch over the gold and silver before the attacks escaped unharmed. The gold and silver is insured and is part of a larger cache controlled by the bank's bullion and precious metals subsidiary, Scotia Mocatta Depository Corp." -

Cache of gold found at WTC; Two truckloads retrieved through a tunnel in rubble
"Workers at Ground Zero unearthed last night a buried treasure of gold, hidden for weeks under the ruins of the World Trade Center. This is not a shocker, as it was rumored that as much as $160 Billion in bullion was stored under the Trade Center." -

Crushed towers give up cache of gold ingots
"RECOVERY workers at Ground Zero have discovered hundreds of gold ingots, part of a billion dollar cache which was lost when the twin towers fell. The collapsed buildings contained a number of vaults and strongrooms, but the police were not saying who owned the gold. The Comex metals trading division of the New York Mercantile Exchange kept 3,800 gold bars — weighing 12 tonnes and worth more than $100 million (£70 million) — in vaults in the building’s basement. Comex also held almost 800,000 ounces of gold there on behalf of others with a value of about $220 million. It also held more than 102 million ounces of silver, worth $430 million. The Bank of Nova Scotia, which kept gold in the Comex vault, reported $200 million of gold lost in the wreckage. Comex also held precious metals for Chase Manhattan Bank, the Bank of New York and Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking." -

"Unknown to most people at the time, $650 million in gold and silver was being kept in a special vault four floors beneath Four World Trade Center. The gold and silver were recently recovered." -

So that is what I want to do is to collect full sets of coins from one year where I have all of them in a series. With all the different coins out there in limited numbers its a real accomplishment when you finally get a full set. So because these coins are so limited and sometimes a coin in a certain series haven't been found so it makes impossible to get the whole series. Let take a look at what can be done.  First you could collect an Gem uncirculated Gold or Platinum series from a given year, you could also try and get a MS69 series from any year. Without population on these coins it does make it hard to do. Well what about all the $1 silver Eagles that came out of The World Trade center in BU or MS69. You could use this page as a reference to what coin years that are out there.  What about an international series maybe collecting Canada Marble Leaf gold coins from 2001 or 2000. As this site gets more updated with coins that was fund at ground zero it will make it easier to find out what is possible to collect. Right now you see a coin on E-Bay and then you start thinking if the other coins in that year is also available. Some people know this information and as soon as I find out I will post it here.

I am very new to collecting this kind of historic coin like the WTC Ground Zero coins are so I need information and I need lots of it. I will find it but it might take some time, but one thing is for sure I will never forget what happened on 9-11-2001.

ground zero coins 1 of WTC Coins 1 of ????

So this is pretty cool, some of the coins from the WTC Ground Zero vault are numbered like the one in the picture above. This means that they all came from the same lot or same person. So lets say John Smith had 269 coins in the vault and all the coins got to PCGS they would then number his coins 1 of 269. All his coins would be numbered like this so there are no 2 of 269  all are numbered 1 of 269 and they are all  grade by PCGS. He could have had many $1 silver eagles and like a series of 1986 gold eagles. Well what happen then was that he would sell off parts of his collection and now these coins are out there. Many people are trying to put together whole gold or platinum collections in numbered coins. So they are trying to put together the coins that where in the vault together and I think that is cool. Most numbered coins is graded as Gem Uncirculated coins witch is at least MS65 but some coins may be even better than that they where just never graded like that the time and extra care and diligence of an actual Numismatic Grade like MS69 was never given to these coins.

So here comes the next question could a coin be send back in to PCGS for a new grading ? Most people I have talked to says don't do it, the very symbol of the coins the American flag in the coin holder will be lost if a coin is re-graded by PCGS.

My personal opinion is that the flag on the coin is very valuable its the  original,  its the way history has made them. The other thing is at if you know that your coin is a sure MS70 but was graded like a Gem Uncirculated keep your coin and treat it like the MS70 that you think it is but keep the history and the flag on your coin if you want to see the real value in these historic coins this is the way to go.

The numbered coins do not tell us anything about the population of any denomination coin it only tell us that one person had 269 coins and he got them all graded by PCGS. It still really cool to have a Gem Uncirculated coin that is numbered or a set of them with the same number.

The different number coins comes in these numbered series.

Gold Heist Story Heist

The basement of 4 World Trade Center housed vaults used to store gold and silver bullion. Published articles about precious metals recovered from the World Trade Center ruins in the aftermath of the attack mention less than $300 million worth of gold. All such reports appear to refer to a removal operation conducted in late October of 2001. On Nov. 1, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani announced that "more than $230 million" worth of gold and silver bars that had been stored in a bomb-proof vault had been recovered. A New York Times article contained: 2

Two Brinks trucks were at ground zero on Wednesday to start hauling away the $200 million in gold and silver that the Bank of Nova Scotia had stored in a vault under the trade center ... A team of 30 firefighters and police officers are helping to move the metals, a task that can be measured practically down to the flake but that has been rounded off at 379,036 ounces of gold and 29,942,619 ounces of silver ..

Another article gave a figure of $650 million to the value of gold in the 4 WTC vault.

An article in the TimesOnline gives the following rundown of precious metals that were being stored in WTC vaults belonging to Comex.

  • Comex metals trading - 3,800 gold bars weighing 12 tonnes and worth more than $100 million
  • Comex clients - 800,000 ounces of gold with a value of about $220 million
  • Comex clients - 102 million ounces of silver, worth $430 million
  • Bank of Nova Scotia - $200 million of gold

The TimesOnline article is not clear as to whether the $200 million in gold reported by the Bank of Nova Scotia was part of the $220 million in gold held by Comex for clients. If so, the total is $750 million; otherwise $950 million.

There appear to be no reports of precious metals discovered between November of 2001 and the completion of excavation several months later. It would seem that at least the better part of a billion dollars worth of precious metals went missing. It is not plausible that whatever destroyed the towers vaporized gold and silver, which are heavy malleable metals that are extremely unlikely to participate in chemical reactions with other materials.

The authors of the book 9/11 Revealed were apparently so impressed with the story that they paid 9-11 Research the ultimate compliment -- they plagiarized the story. The following passage from the 9-11 Research critique of the book explains how the report was lifted by 9/11 Revealed without credit:

One of the more egregious examples of the book's appropriation without credit of 911Research's reporting is its paragraph covering the discrepancy between the value of precious metals reportedly stored under the World Trade Center and the value reported recovered after the attack.

9/11 Revealed copies this image, along with the gist of 911Research's original reporting, without crediting 911Research.

Some $230 million worth of gold was discovered in a lorry in a tunnel under the Center in November 2001. 21 We have seen no reports of other caches being found. However, Comex was reported to have at least $950 million worth of gold stored in its vault under the Center, and the fate of that haul remains unknown. 22

Unknown to most people at the time, $650 million in gold and silver was being kept in a special vault four floors beneath Four World Trade Center. The gold and silver were recently recovered.

It has taken collectors years to get a full set of the World Trade Center Ground Zero coins in the picture about is the best set I have ever seen. The 1999 gold set including the $10 W all of them in MS69 wow that is beautiful.

So anyway before I got side tracked by the great collection above this post should be about how hard it is to collect a Gold Set.

Here some numbers.

2001 Gold Set is possible right now to get all pieces to it out of WTC recovered coins, the most difficult coin to find is the $50 Gold Eagle in MS69

2000 Gold Set I do not have any information about this set at this time

1999 Gold Set is going to be really hard to put together as there where only found 4 pieces of the 1999 $10 gold Eagle. The $10-W has a population of only 10 coins found at the world trade center 7 in MS69 and 3 in MS68. The set above in the picture is for sale right now for $135,000.

1998 Gold Set is also very hard to assemble as there where only found 150 pieces of the $50 gold coin in MS69. The $25 Gold coin is all certified as Gem Unc. and only 10 coins where found. One coin was certified MS67 of the $25 coins found at WTC. Of the $10 gold coin 1998 only 7 coins where found and they where all graded MS68. The $5 gold coin from 1998 has a population number of a few hundred. So with these numbers its going to be very hard to put together a complete set of the 1998 gold coins. A complete set is for sale at $65,000 right now.

When more information becomes available I will update this posting.
